Reasons Why You'll Love This Recipe

Whether you're looking for an easy meal or a great snack during movie night, a game day treat, or a quick lunch, these hot pockets totally fit the bill. They are made with simple ingredients that are easy to find at any grocery store and taste better than frozen hot pockets.

You can make a batch of these homemade air fryer hot pockets ahead of time and then store them in the refrigerator or freezer for a quick and convenient snack or meal.

These hot pockets are so versatile and you can even put your favorite pizza toppings on the inside of the hot pocket.

In this image, you can see a collection of ingredients ready to be used. The ingredients include crescent roll dough, shredded mozzarella cheese, pizza sauce, chopped pepperoni slices, all-purpose flour, and oil.

    Key Ingredients

Crescent roll dough: Chilled crescent roll dough is a time-saving option for the hot pocket shell. You can also use homemade pizza dough, store-bought pizza dough, or puff pastry as alternatives to crescent rolls.

Mozzarella cheese: Melty mozzarella cheese adds a deliciously gooey texture to the hot pockets. Feel free to experiment with cheddar cheese, parmesan cheese, Swiss cheese, or provolone.

    Step-By-Step Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees Celsius).

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled crescent roll dough into 8 rectangles.

Place a spoonful of pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, and chopped pepperoni on each rectangle.

Toppings added to a pastry triangle - pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni.

Fold the dough over the filling, then to press the edges together, sealing the hot pockets.

Brush the tops of the hot pockets with the beaten egg. This egg wash will give them a beautiful golden brown and crispy crust.

Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush it with oil to prevent sticking.

This image portrays an air fryer basket containing two unbaked hot pockets. The hot pockets are awaiting cooking, ready to be transformed into delicious, piping-hot treats.

Place the hot pockets inside the air fryer in a single layer, leaving space between each one.

Cook the hot pockets by air frying them for 11-13 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use an instant-read thermometer to ensure that the internal temperature of the hot pockets reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius).

Once cooked, carefully remove each flakey hot pocket from the air fryer and let them cool for 5 minutes before serving. They will be extremely hot inside, so please be cautious.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

Feel free to experiment with different fillings and also toppings. Some delicious options include cooked bacon, leftover chicken, sliced mushrooms, or chopped onions.

If you follow a gluten-free diet, you can make these hot pockets gluten-free by using gluten-free dough instead of crescent roll dough.

To add some spiciness, include red pepper flakes, chopped jalapenos, or paprika to the filling of your air fryer homemade hot pocket.

If you prefer a different shape, you can make a rectangular or square type of hot pocket.

    Notes

Hashbrowns: Diced hashbrowns give this hearty casserole a robust texture. We sometimes use 4-6 diced yellow potatoes, sweet potatoes, or tater tots for this recipe. Diced hash browns are also known as southern hash browns.
Kielbasa sausage: Any type of your favorite good quality sausage will work for this recipe. Chorizo, breakfast sausage, Italian sausage, turkey sausage, Andouille sausage, pork sausage, chicken sausage, and vegetarian sausages are some examples.
Onion: We used red onion but shallots, green onions, white onions, sweet onions, or leeks could be used instead.
Shredded cheddar cheese: This gives the casserole a cheesy and creamy texture. Feel free to use parmesan cheese, Monterey Jack cheese, pepper jack cheese, non-dairy cheese, or any other melty shredded cheese.
Cream of mushroom soup: Cream of chicken soup or cream of celery soup can be used instead to give the casserole a creamy texture.
Cream cheese: Sour cream or Greek yogurt can also be used as substitutes.
Heavy whipping cream: This compliments the savory flavors and adds extra creaminess to this delicious recipe.
Italian seasoning: Dried oregano, basil, or thyme can be used instead.
