Ingredients

  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 1 cup Diced onion
  • ½ cup Diced green bell pepper
  • 1 ½ cup Pasta sauce
  • ½ cup Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp Chili powder
  • 1 tsp Smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp Ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups Cheddar cheese, shredded,

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Large skillet
  • Aluminum foil or parchment paper
  • Spatula or meat chopper

Method

  1. Preheat your oven according to the instructions in the Texas toast package. Place the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Toast them in the oven according to the package instructions and then remove and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef for around 5-7 minutes until it's no longer pink. Break it apart with a spatula or a meat chopper as it cooks.
  3. Add in diced onions and diced green bell peppers to the skillet. Sauté them for 3-4 minutes until they become soft and fragrant.
  4. Stir in the pasta sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Taste your sauce and adjust the seasonings to your preference.
  5. Simmer the mixture for about 5 minutes or until it thickens.
  6. Spoon the delicious meat mixture evenly on top of the cheesy Texas toast slices and then sprinkle a generous amount of shredded cheddar cheese on each slice.
  7. Return the cheesy Texas toast back into the oven for 1-2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and slightly bubbly.
  8. Serve your Texas Toast Sloppy Joes immediately while warm, and enjoy!

Notes

Texas toast: Feel free to use any type of sturdy bread. Garlic toast, white bread, sourdough bread, and hamburger buns will work for this recipe. For a gluten free option, Schar Baguette or Against the Grain bread are great alternatives.
Ground beef: For this recipe, I used 80/20 ground beef, but you can use extra-lean ground beef, ground turkey, ground chicken, or Italian sausage.
Green pepper: You can use a red, yellow or orange pepper instead of a green pepper.
Pasta sauce: Tomato paste, tomato sauce, or your favorite brand of sloppy joe sauce can be used in this recipe.
Ketchup: You can use about 2 tablespoons of brown sugar as a substitute.
Cheddar cheese: Mozzarella cheese or a slice of American cheese can be placed on top of each piece of toast instead. Moocho cheese and Follow Your Heart are great dairy free alternatives.
Spices: Feel free to add garlic powder, Italian seasoning, onion powder, or red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
