Pan-Grilled Asparagus is probably the second-most-loved vegetable in our house, right after Brussels sprouts. Whenever I put it on the dinner table, the kids never complain. They just devour it. And honestly, as a parent, I’ll take that win!

I’m not going to lie, though... I’m not a huge fan of asparagus myself. Mostly ’cause it has something to do with its one unfortunate side effect. But I still love making it because my family loves it.

The good news is, this pan-grilled asparagus is quick, easy, and requires very little effort. The asparagus gets a nice little char from the pan while staying tender and crisp. It’s the kind of side dish you can throw together while you’re making the rest of dinner.

So if your family loves asparagus as much as mine does, give this recipe a try. It might just become one of those vegetables you find yourself making again and again.

And whatever you do tho, don’t skip the Parmesan and fresh lemon juice. Those two things take these veggies to a whole ’nother level.

    Recipe Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this Pan Grilled Asparagus

Ingredients for this grilled asparagus recipe

    Ingredient Notes

Asparagus: Fresh asparagus has a mildly sweet, grassy flavor and a firm texture that holds up well to high heat. I recommend choosing thicker spears when you can. They're easier to handle and less likely to overcook.

Olive oil: Helps with browning and prevents sticking. Avocado or grapeseed oil works too.

Balsamic vinegar: Adds brightness, tang, and a little sweetness. Substitutes: Lemon juice, red wine vinegar, or sherry vinegar.

Salt: Essential for flavor balance. Kosher or sea salt dissolves easily. If you only have table salt, I recommend using slightly less of it.

Black pepper: White pepper works too.

How To make Pan Grilled Asparagus Step-By-Step

Check out these step-by-step instructions with images. Just so you know, you'll find all the details and exact ingredients of this recipe on the printable recipe card below!

Step 1. Trim the Asparagus: Hold one stalk at both ends and gently bend it. It will naturally snap where the tough, woody part ends. Snap the rest. I usually discard the ends.

Step 2. Rinse and Dry: Rinse the asparagus under cool water. Pat each of them completely dry with a paper or kitchen towel. Dry asparagus grills better and won't steam.

Step 3. Season: Place the asparagus in a shallow dish. Drizzle them all with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle them also with salt and pepper. Toss them gently until each of them are evenly coated.

Step 4. Heat the Pan: Place your grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Let it heat for 2-3 minutes. You want it hot before the asparagus goes in.

Step 5. Cook: Lay the asparagus in a single layer. Be sure not to crowd the pan or the asparagus will steam instead of char. Cook them for 4-5 minutes. Turn them with tongs. Cook them for

Step 6. Rest and Serve: Remove them from heat and let them rest for 2 minutes. Serve them warm.

    Recipe Tips and Tricks

Dry it well: Pat your asparagus completely dry before seasoning. Wet asparagus steams instead of chars.

Don't crowd the pan: Spacing gives the asparagus room to char.

Cheese finish: A sprinkle of Parmesan or feta turns this simple side into something fancy looking and delicious.

    Storage and Reheating

Asparagus is best fresh, but here's how to handle leftovers.

Refrigerator: Store them in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. Keep the spears in a single layer if possible.

Freezer: Cooked asparagus can be frozen, but it softens once you thaw it. I like to use thawed asparagus in soups, frittatas, or casseroles rather than as a standalone side. They can freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheating: Oven: 325°F for 5-8 minutes. Air fryer: 350°F for 3-5 minutes. Skillet: A quick sauté in a hot pan with a touch of oil.

    Your Questions Answered

How do I know when the asparagus is done?

It is done when it turns bright green, tender when pierced with a fork.

Can I grill outside on a BBQ?

Sure! Lay the spears perpendicular to the grates so they don't fall through.

Can this be made in the oven?

Absolutely. Roast them at 425°F for 10-12 minutes.

Do I need to peel asparagus?

Only if the stalks are very thick. Not necessary for most bunches.

    What pairs well with this?

Steak, chicken, salmon, eggs, pasta. It's a side dish that works with just about anything.

    Ingredients Method Notes

    Ingredients

    • 1 bunch fresh asparagus (about 1 pound)
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1-2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (I used 2)
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

    Method

    1. Hold one stalk at both ends and gently bend it. It will naturally snap where the tough, woody part ends. Snap the rest. I usually discard the ends.
    2. Rinse the asparagus under cool water. Pat each of them completely dry with a paper or kitchen towel. Dry asparagus grills better and won't steam.

    5. Lay the asparagus in a single layer. Be sure not to crowd the pan or the asparagus will steam instead of char. Cook them for 4-5 minutes. Turn them with tongs.
    6. Cook them for another 4-5 minutes until they turn bright green, are lightly charred, and tender when pierced with a fork. If they look like they are charring too fast, lower the heat slightly.
    7. Remove them from heat and let them rest for 2 minutes. Serve them warm.
