    Understanding Garlic

Before you start, I think it’s helpful to understand the basic parts of garlic so you know what we’re working with.

Bulb (or Head): The whole, outer-wrapped cluster of garlic.

Clove: The individual piece inside the bulb.

Papery Skin: The protective, papery skin surrounding each clove.

Root End: The hard, flat bottom where the clove attaches to the bulb.

Honestly, that’s really all you need to know about garlic.

How To Peel, Slice, and Cut Garlic

Method 1: Trim the Ends and Peel

    Peeled clove

This is one of the easiest and cleanest ways to peel garlic, especially if you want nice-looking slices afterward.

Start by cutting off the hard root end as well as the pointed tip. Once the ends are cut, the skin usually peels away pretty easily with your fingers.

    Method 2: Smash and Peel

    Knife smashing a clove
    Smashed clove

This is probably the method most home cooks use because it's quick, easy, and honestly kind of satisfying. It's a great way to release stress in the kitchen without feeling like you are being judged.

Start by trimming the root end first. Place the garlic clove on your cutting board and lay the flat side of your knife over it. I usually tilt the blade down so it doesn't cut me. Quickly tap or press the knife down gently with the palm of your hand until the clove cracks slightly.

The skin should loosen right away and peel off easily.

If you have only got a few cloves to peel, this is usually the fastest way to do it.

Method 3: Shake Garlic in a Jar

    Peeled cloves in the jar

If you are peeling a lot of garlic, this trick can save you some time.

Place the cloves into a mason jar, secure the lid tightly, and shake it hard for about 20 to 30 seconds.

As the cloves bounce around, the skins start loosening and separating from the garlic.

This method works best with slightly older garlic that has drier skin. It is also something you can have your kids or partner help you with.

Method 4: Soak Garlic in Warm Water

    Water poured over the cloves

Some garlic just refuses to peel easily, and that's where warm water comes to the rescue.

Place the cloves into a small bowl and pour hot water over them. The water should be hot but not boiling. Let them sit for about 2 to 3 minutes, then drain and peel.

The warm water helps soften the skin and loosen it from the clove. Peeling soft skin is so satisfying!

Method 5: Slice the Garlic in Half to Peel

    Knife slicing a clove

This is another simple trick that makes peeling easier and it's my personal favorite.

Place the garlic clove on its side and slice it lengthwise from top to bottom. Once it's cut, the skin usually pulls away much more easily.

    Storage and Reheating

If you peel extra garlic to save time later in the week:

In the Fridge: Store peeled cloves in an airtight glass container or zip-top bag in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

In the Freezer: Lay peeled whole cloves flat on a tray, freeze until solid, then transfer them to a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

    Your Questions Answered

Can I microwave garlic instead of peel it?

I don't recommend it but of if you are in a rush, 20 seconds will do.

Should I remove the green germ inside a garlic clove?

Yes, please remove it. The green stem (germ) is safe to eat, but it can add a slightly bitter or harsh flavor to your food.

How far in advance can I peel garlic?

I usually peel them up to 1 week in advance.
